This exquisite 19th century oak campaign chest, a masterpiece from Harland & Wolff, showcases five drawers meticulously arranged in one section, as opposed to the typical two short and three long drawers configuration. The reverse of the chest bears the intriguing yard number 289, a testament to its connection with the historic ship, Scotsman. Scotsman was a steel steam passenger ship, constructed by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 13 December 1894. Commissioned by Richard Mills & Co for the Dominion Line, this magnificent vessel boasted an average speed of 13 knots and a weight of 1710grt. Measuring 143.5m. x 15m. x 9.7m., Scotsman was a significant addition to the Dominion Line's fleet. The brass handles adorning the campaign chest echo the elegance and refinement of the era, adding a touch of sophistication to this impressive piece of furniture. The Scotsman, unfortunately, met an untimely end in the Belle Isle Straits, Canada, in 1899, resulting in the loss of 13 lives. This 37ins. x 21ins. x 26ins. campaign chest, crafted from rich, solid oak, stands as a testament to the unparalleled craftsmanship of Harland & Wolff during the 1890s.
