EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts Sigesbeckia jorullensis, also known as Sundew-involucrated Siegesbeckia or Siegesbeckia droseroides. The botanical illustration was meticulously created by Edward Dalton Smith and beautifully rendered in engraving by Weddell for Robert Sweet's seminal work, "The British Flower Garden," published in Ridgeway, London, in 1827. Sigesbeckia jorullensis is a striking plant native to Mexico and Central America. Its common names reflect its resemblance to sundews, with sticky glands on its leaves that trap and feed on insects. However, unlike true sundews, Sigesbeckia jorullensis is not carnivorous, deriving most of its nutrients from the soil. The engraving captures the plant's intricate details, from its slender stems adorned with small, oval leaves to its vibrant, daisy-like flowers. The delicate, white petals surround a central disc of yellow anthers and red stigmas, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. This botanical masterpiece not only showcases the beauty of Sigesbeckia jorullensis but also highlights the skill and artistry of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the time. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the plant to life, allowing us to appreciate its unique features and marvel at the wonders of the natural world.
