EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving showcases two magnificent flowers of the natural world: the Red Campion, Silene dioica, and the White Behen, Centaurea behen. The Red Campion, also known as Lychnis sylvestris or Safed in Ayurvedic medicine, is a beautiful wildflower native to Europe and Asia. Its vibrant red blooms appear in late spring and summer, attracting various pollinators with their alluring nectar. The plant's diocious nature means that male and female flowers grow on separate plants. The White Behen, or Safaid Behen as it is known in Ayurveda, is a striking member of the Daisy family. Its elegant white blossoms, with a distinctive pink center, bloom from mid-summer through autumn. The plant's name, Behen, is derived from the Greek word for 'bean,' likely due to the bean-like seed pods it produces. This botanical illustration is taken from the Krauterbuch, or Herbal, by the renowned German botanist Adam Lonicer. The work was first published in Frankfurt in 1557, with this particular engraving being part of a 17th-century pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only. The captions in this edition are provided in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript, reflecting the international reach and impact of Lonicer's work in the field of botany and medicine.
