Philippe III, le Bon, Duke of Burgundy (1396-1467), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard, based on a portrait in Roger de Gaignières portfolio "Maisons etrangeres XI 29." The Duke is shown wearing the ceremonial robes of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he founded in 1430. The Order, one of the most prestigious and ancient chivalric orders in Europe, was established to promote unity and brotherhood among the nobility. Philippe III, also known as Philip the Good, was a significant figure in European politics during the 15th century. He expanded the Burgundian territories, which included modern-day Belgium, the Netherlands, and parts of France, and was a major patron of the arts. The Order of the Golden Fleece became a symbol of the power and wealth of the Burgundian court. The Duke is dressed in the full regalia of the Order, including a white tunic with the emblem of the Golden Fleece embroidered in gold on the chest, a red mantle lined with ermine, and a gold collar adorned with the fleece and the pendants of the Order. The intricate details of the Duke's costume, from the folds of his robes to the embroidery on his mantle, are beautifully rendered in the lithograph. This historical image is taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. The collection, which includes over 1,200 plates, is a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of European history and costume.
