EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals published in 1836, showcases two of the most intriguing and vulnerable marine mammals: the Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) and the Dugong (Dugong dugon). The Narwhal, also known as the "unicorn of the sea," is a large, toothed whale found primarily in the Arctic waters of Canada, Greenland, and Russia. The most distinctive feature of the Narwhal is its long, helical tusk, which can grow up to 10 feet long. This tusk is actually a tooth that protrudes from the upper left jaw, and is used for communication, mating, and possibly for breaking through the ice. Narwhals are considered vulnerable due to threats such as climate change, hunting, and habitat loss. The Dugong, also known as the Sea Cow or the Dugong, is a large, herbivorous marine mammal found in the shallow waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. Dugongs are characterized by their rounded snout, which they use to grind up seagrasses and other vegetation on the ocean floor. They are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss, accidental entanglement in fishing gear, and hunting. Brodtmann's meticulous attention to detail in this lithograph captures the grace and beauty of these two magnificent creatures, reminding us of the importance of protecting and preserving their habitats and populations for future generations to enjoy.
