EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, showcases four Medieval Kings of Hungary: Saint Stephen (I) (r. 1000-1038), King Ladislaus I (I) (r. 1342-1356), Geza I or Magnus (I) (r. 1074-1077 or 1075-1095), and Arpad (r. 896-907). Saint Stephen, the first King of Hungary, is depicted in regal attire, wearing a crown adorned with precious stones and holding a scepter in one hand and a cross in the other. He is considered the patron saint of Hungary and is known for his role in the Christianization of the Hungarian people. King Ladislaus I, also known as Louis the Great, is shown wearing a crown with a cross and a long, flowing robe. He was a successful military leader and expanded the Hungarian kingdom to its greatest extent during his reign. Geza I or Magnus I, the founder of the Hungarian state, is depicted in traditional Hungarian clothing, wearing a fur-trimmed robe and holding a scepter. He is also shown with a crown on his head, symbolizing his royal status. Arpad, the founder of the Hungarian dynasty, is shown wearing a long, fur-trimmed robe and holding a staff. He is considered the ancestor of all Hungarian kings and is known for his role in the early history of the Hungarian people. This intricately detailed illustration offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Medieval Hungary, providing a fascinating insight into the fashion and iconography of the time. The skillful use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the engraving, making it a true masterpiece of historical art.
