EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the sixth emperor of the Qing Dynasty of China, Yongzheng, who reigned as the Kien Long Emperor from 1736 to 1795. Born in 1711, Kien Long was the son of the Yongzheng Emperor and succeeded his father at the age of 36. He is renowned for his patronage of the arts and culture, particularly in the areas of painting, calligraphy, and poetry. The image of Kien Long is based on an original work by Antoine Cardon, as reproduced in the 1824 publication "China, Its Costumes, Arts, Manufactures, etc." by Bertin and Bretons. The engraving was further handcoloured by Andrea Freschi. Kien Long is depicted in formal attire, wearing a long robe with a mandarin collar and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a dragon motif. He is shown with a stern expression, holding a ceremonial fan in his right hand and a seal in his left. The emperor's imperial robes are intricately detailed, with elaborate patterns and designs, reflecting the grandeur and opulence of the Qing Dynasty court. The Qing Dynasty, which ruled China from 1644 to 1912, is known for its rich cultural heritage and artistic achievements. Kien Long's reign marked a period of stability and prosperity, during which China continued to be a major center of artistic and intellectual activity. This engraving provides a glimpse into the grandeur and splendor of the Qing Dynasty court and the powerful image of one of its most renowned emperors.
