EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, titled "Costumes Historiques de la France" and published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852, offers a fascinating glimpse into the medieval monetary system of France. The image showcases a collection of French silver (argent) and copper (billon) coins from the medieval period. At the center of the composition, we find six distinct coins arranged meticulously. The largest coin, the Gros Tournois (1), bears the coat of arms of France, symbolizing the sovereign power of the monarchy. The two smaller silver coins, labeled as Blancs (2 and 3), were used as deniers or pennies, and were the smallest coins in circulation during the late Middle Ages. To the right, we find a Liard (5), which was a silver coin worth a third of a denier. Lastly, an Obole (6) made of copper, is depicted at the bottom left corner of the image. The Obole was the smallest coin in circulation during the Middle Ages, and was used as a fraction of a denier. The intricate details of the coins' designs and the meticulous hand-colouring bring the medieval era to life, offering a captivating visual representation of France's rich historical and monetary past. This stunning lithograph is not only an important historical record but also a beautiful work of art that transports us back in time.
