EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Blastoids and other Fossil Echinoderms," is a stunning visual representation of various extinct Blastoid echinoderms, showcasing their unique and intricate structures. The illustration, created by Ernst Haeckel and beautifully rendered in chromolithography by Adolf Glitsch, was first published in Haeckel's seminal work, "Art Forms in Nature," in 1904. Blastoids were a diverse group of echinoderms that thrived in the Paleozoic Era, around 520 to 350 million years ago. They are characterized by their distinctive, bulbous, and often spherical bodies, which bore numerous bud-like projections. The Blastoids depicted in this illustration include the Pyriformis species of Pentremites (1), Orophocrinus orbignyanus (2), several unidentified Pentremites species (3), Astrocrinus cruciatus (4), Orophocrinus stelliformis (5), Phaenoschisma acutum (6), Nucleocrinus species (7 and 9), Nucleocrinus verneuili (8), Codaster acutus (9), Eleutherocrinus cassedayi (10), Asteroblastus stellatus (11), and Asteroblastus volborthi (12). The intricate details of their skeletons, which are preserved as fossils, are on full display in this illustration. Some of these Blastoids, like the Orophocrinus orbignyanus and Asteroblastus stellatus, bore long, slender arms, while others, such as the Nucleocrinus verneuili, had more compact, rounded arms. The varied shapes and structures of these ancient marine organisms are a testament to the rich diversity of life that has existed on Earth throughout its history. This illustration not only serves as a beautiful work of art but also offers valuable insights into the fascinating world of extinct marine life. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the natural world, both past and present, to better understand the intricacies of life and the intricacies of its evolution.
