EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie-Louise of Austria (1791-1847), the second empress of Napoleon I, is depicted in this stunning portrait painting from the year of her marriage to the French emperor in 1810. Born as Archduchess of Austria, Marie-Louise was the eldest daughter of Emperor Leopold II and his wife, Maria Ludovica of Austria-Este. At the age of 18, she was chosen by Napoleon as his bride to secure the alliance of Austria and end the War of the Fifth Coalition. The painting captures the young empress in her regal attire, wearing a white gown adorned with pearls and diamonds, and a golden diadem on her head. Her expressive eyes convey a sense of intelligence and determination, while her delicate features and graceful posture reflect her aristocratic upbringing. The artist, yet to be identified, skillfully portrays the intricate details of Marie-Louise's elaborate hairstyle and the rich textures of her gown, creating an exquisite and timeless image of imperial grandeur. Marie-Louise's marriage to Napoleon marked the beginning of a tumultuous chapter in her life. She gave birth to a son, Napoleon II, who was recognized as the king of Rome, but the couple's relationship was fraught with power struggles and infidelities. After Napoleon's defeat in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Marie-Louise and her son were exiled to Austria, where she spent the remainder of her life as a respected and beloved figure of the Habsburg court. This evocative portrait of Marie-Louise offers a glimpse into the opulence and complexity of European royalty during the Napoleonic era, and serves as a testament to the enduring allure of imperial history.
