EDITORS COMMENTS
Lord De Ros, also known as the 'Premier Baron,' is depicted in this striking photograph taken in 1907. The Baron, whose full name was William Henry de Ros, 12th Baron de Ros of Helmsley, was a prominent figure in British history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lord De Ros is seen here wearing the red uniform of the Yeomen of the Guard, an elite infantry regiment in the British Army, which was also known as the "Beefeaters." The uniform is adorned with gold braid and other decorative elements, adding to the regal and imposing appearance of the Baron. The Premier Baron was a title given to the senior baron in the English peerage, a position that Lord De Ros held from 1893 until his death in 1914. He was a member of the House of Lords and played a significant role in the political and social life of the time. Lord De Ros was also a prominent landowner and held extensive estates in Yorkshire, including Helmsley Castle, which has been in the de Ros family since the 13th century. He was known for his patronage of the arts and was a generous benefactor to various charities and causes. This photograph provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in British history. The red uniform of the Yeomen of the Guard, with its gold braid and decorative elements, adds to the sense of grandeur and importance that surrounded Lord De Ros as the Premier Baron of England.
