EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and timeless photograph, Lady Idina Sackville (1893-1955) is captured on the brink of a significant moment in her life as she announces her engagement to Mr. Euan Wallace of the 2nd Life Guards. The daughter of Muriel, Countess de la Warr, and granddaughter of Lord Brassey, Lady Idina's pedigree is evident in her refined and regal bearing. The year is 1913, and the young couple's wedding is set to take place on November 25th. However, this union would not last long. Lady Idina and Mr. Wallace divorced in 1919, marking the beginning of a series of marriages that would make her a notorious figure in society. In total, Lady Idina would be married five times, earning her the moniker "The Bolter" and gaining infamy as a member of the notorious Happy Valley Set in Kenya. Her scandalous behavior and debauched decadence would inspire characters in numerous novels, including Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, and Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. Despite the controversies that would follow her throughout her life, Lady Idina's engagement to Mr. Wallace represents a moment of innocence and excitement, a brief pause before the storm of scandal and notoriety that would come to define her later years. The photograph stands as a testament to a bygone era of society and the complexities of human relationships.
