Dock Dockyard Enormous Floating Kobe Maru Mitsubishi Ship Building Steam Ship Yard 1922
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the enormous floating dock at the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Yard in Kobe, Japan, takes center stage. The dock, a marvel of engineering and industry, stretches out into the harbor, its massive structure designed to accommodate the largest of vessels. In this image, the dock is seen in its prime, with the steam ship Hakozaki Maru SS undergoing completion. The Hakozaki Maru SS, a liner taken over by the Japanese government during the Second World War for use as a transport, is pictured here in its final stages of construction. However, the ship's story did not have a happy ending. On March 19th, 1945, while in the Yellow Sea, the Hakozaki Maru SS was torpedoed and sunk by the U.S. submarine USS Balao. The photograph, taken in 1922, offers a glimpse into the bustling activity of the Kobe dockyard. The steam ships, cranes, and workers all contribute to the industrial landscape, showcasing the importance of shipbuilding in Japan's economy during this time. The image is a testament to Japan's industrial prowess and its ability to build impressive structures, even in the face of adversity. The photograph is a valuable historical record, providing insight into Japan's maritime history and its shipbuilding industry during the early 20th century. It is a reminder of the past, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who built and sailed these magnificent vessels, and a tribute to the enduring allure of the sea.
