EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration by the renowned German artist Heinrich Harder depicts Hypohippus, an extinct genus of three-toed horses that roamed the Earth during the late Eocene epoch, approximately 37-34 million years ago. Hypohippus is considered a transitional species between the early horses with four toes and the more modern horses with only one toe per side. The image captures the horse's distinctive features, including its small size, slender build, and the three toes on each hind foot. The three-toed structure allowed the animal to adapt to various terrains, providing greater agility and stability. The illustration also highlights the horse's long, slender neck, small head, and the prominent mane and tail. The natural historian Wilhelm Bolsche penned the descriptive text accompanying this illustration, providing insights into the life of this fascinating prehistoric creature. Bolshe notes that Hypohippus likely inhabited open grasslands and savannas, feeding on a diet consisting mainly of grasses and herbs. Heinrich Harder, a German landscape artist and book illustrator, created this illustration as part of a series of prehistoric creature cards published by the renowned German publishing house, J.F. Lehmann's Verlag, under the title "Tiere der Urwelt – Animals of the Prehistoric World." Harder's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring these extinct creatures to life through his art have made this series a beloved and enduring testament to the rich history of the natural world.
