EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough: Sailors Preparing to Land at Canakkale, Turkey, 1923 This evocative photograph captures a moment of anticipation as sailors from HMS Marlborough prepare to land on the shores of Canakkale, Turkey, in 1923. The Iron Duke-class battleship, named after the famous British military leader John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, HMS Marlborough took part in several significant conflicts, including the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, the sailors on deck don their equipment and ready themselves for the landing, their expressions a mix of determination and apprehension. The ship's impressive size and might are on full display, with the Turkish coastline and the fortified town of Sultanieh (now known as Canakkale) visible in the background. The 1920s were a pivotal time in world history, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the naval operations of the British Royal Navy during that era. The Iron Duke-class battleships, such as HMS Marlborough, were symbols of power and influence, and their presence in the Mediterranean and Black Seas played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the region during the interwar period.
