EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored stipple copperplate engraving depicts the Franklin Tree, Franklinia alatamaha, a rare and historically significant botanical specimen that is sadly extinct in the wild. The image was created by the skilled hands of French botanical illustrator Pancrace Bessa, with the meticulous engraving techniques of Barrois. The engraving is taken from Mordant de Launay's Herbier General de l'Amateur, published in Paris in 1820. The Franklin Tree, also known as the Franklinia, is a native flowering plant that was once found in the swamps and forests of the southeastern United States, specifically in what is now Georgia and South Carolina. The tree was first discovered by John Bartram in 1765, and was later named in honor of Benjamin Franklin due to its discovery during his tenure as colonial governor of Pennsylvania. The Franklin Tree is easily recognizable by its unique white, five-petaled flowers, which resemble a cross between a camellia and an azalea. The tree's leaves are glossy, dark green, and simple, and it typically grew to be around 30 feet tall. Despite its beauty and historical significance, the Franklin Tree is now extinct in the wild due to habitat loss and over-collection for horticultural purposes. However, it continues to thrive in botanical gardens and private collections around the world, serving as a reminder of the natural wonders that once flourished in the southeastern United States. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricacies of botanical illustration and copperplate engraving techniques, but also highlights the importance of preserving and celebrating the natural world, even when faced with extinction.
