13th Beziers Breviary Damour Month Romanesque Aisa
EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illuminated page is taken from the Breviary of Love, a 13th century manuscript produced in the Provencal School, now housed in the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France. The manuscript, also known as the Aisa-Dammousès Breviary, is a devotional text that was likely created for Ermengol X, Count of Urgell and Cerdanya, and his wife Alamanda de Moncada. The month of April is depicted in this image, with the figure of Amor, or Cupid, holding a bow and arrow, symbolizing the beginning of the spring season and the awakening of love. The intricate illustrations and gold embellishments are characteristic of the Romanesque style, which flourished in southern France during the Middle Ages. The Breviary of Love is an important historical artifact that provides insight into the cultural and artistic traditions of medieval Europe, and serves as a testament to the enduring power of love as a theme in art and literature.
