1770 1859 Bishop Churchman Durham Maltby

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of the Reverend Edward Maltby (1770-1859), an English churchman who rose to become the 37th Bishop of Durham in the Church of England. The image, created during Maltby's tenure as bishop, showcases his dignified demeanor and deep-set, thoughtful eyes that seem to gaze introspectively into the distance. Born on March 26, 1770, in the historic market town of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, Maltby was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a Master of Arts degree. Ordained as a deacon in 1795 and a priest in 1796, Maltby's early career saw him serve various parishes in the diocese of Durham. He was a dedicated clergyman, renowned for his pastoral care and commitment to his flock. In 1835, Maltby was appointed Bishop Cohortarius, a position that saw him serve as the assistant bishop to the Bishop of Durham. Just three years later, on November 1, 1838, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Durham, a role he held until his retirement in 1857. During his time as bishop, Maltby focused on improving education and social welfare in the diocese, as well as advocating for the rights of the working class. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a man who dedicated his life to the Church and the people of Durham, leaving a lasting impact on the region and its history. The image, with its rich details and intricate textures, transports us back in time, allowing us to connect with the past and appreciate the legacy of this remarkable English churchman.
