Chinese Mining Boy, South Africa

A Chinese Mining Boy, South Africa. Between 1904 and 1910, over 63, 000 contracted miners were brought in to work the mines of the Witwatersrand. Most of these contractors were recruited from the provinces of Chihli (Zhili), Shantung (Shandong) and Honan (Henan) in China. They were repatriated after 1910, because of strong White opposition to their presence. Date: circa 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the image of a young Chinese mining boy, seated on the steps of a mine compound in South Africa during the early 1900s. Between 1904 and 1910, over 63,000 Chinese laborers, also known as "coolies," were brought in to work the gold mines of the Witwatersrand. The majority of these contracted miners were recruited from the provinces of Chihli (Zhili), Shantung (Shandong), and Honan (Henan) in China. The boy in the photograph wears traditional Chinese clothing, with his hair styled in long pigtails, a hairstyle that was common during this period. He is shown with his arms folded and crossed, perhaps taking a break from the grueling work in the mines. The mine compound in the background, with its steps leading up to the entrance, is a reminder of the harsh living conditions endured by the Chinese miners. The presence of the Chinese miners was unpopular among the white population in South Africa, leading to their repatriation after 1910. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of the Chinese mining laborers in South Africa during the early 1900s, a period marked by the exploitation of cheap labor and the struggle for power and resources in the mining industry.
