EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature, created by Terry Parker in 1882, depicts a humorous encounter between two political giants of the Victorian era: William E. Gladstone and his predecessor as Liberal Party leader, Lord Palmerston. In this playful scene, the ghostly figure of Palmerston, dressed in a top hat and tails, appears bewildered as he gazes upon a seated Gladstone, who is engrossed in parliamentary business on Derby Day. Derby Day, an annual horse race held in Epsom, was traditionally a day of rest for Members of Parliament. Palmerston, a grand old man of politics, cannot believe his eyes as he sees Gladstone, his successor, defying the convention and attending to government affairs instead of enjoying the festivities. Gladstone, ever the diligent politician, calmly responds to Palmerston's surprise. He informs the ghostly apparition that he will indeed be visiting Epsom on Sunday, but only to pay a call on his younger colleague, Lord Rosebery. With a stack of documents in front of him and a determined expression on his face, Gladstone demonstrates his unwavering commitment to his duties as Prime Minister. This delightful caricature, titled "Gladstone and the Ghost of Palmerston," offers a glimpse into the lighter side of Victorian politics. The image captures the essence of the political rivalry and camaraderie that existed between these two influential figures, as well as the dedication and hard work that defined their careers.
