Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), was a prominent British naval officer of the 18th century. Keppel's naval career began in 1740, and he quickly rose through the ranks, serving under Admiral Edward Boscawen during the War of Austrian Succession. In 1755, he was appointed flag captain to Admiral Edward Hawke, and in 1759, he played a crucial role in the Battle of Quiberon Bay, which marked the end of French naval power in the English Channel. This striking portrait of Augustus Keppel, taken from an anonymous engraver's work, depicts the viscount in his full regalia as a naval officer.
