Animals at a French Zoo - Cashmere goat

Animals at a French Zoo - Cashmere goat - Long haired goat. Part of Box 209 Boswell collection - Old and New French Zoo. A cashmere goat is any breed of goat that produces cashmere wool, the goats fine, soft, downy, winter undercoat, in commercial quality and quantity. This undercoat grows as the day length shortens and is associated with an outer coat of coarse hair, which is present all the year and is called guard hair. Most common goat breeds, including dairy goats, grow this two-coated fleece. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a cashmere goat residing in a French zoo around the turn of the 20th century. The cashmere goat, with its long, luxurious coat, is a breed known for producing the finest, softest, downy undercoat that grows during the winter months. Unlike the coarse outer coat that remains throughout the year, this undercoat, or guard hair, is what sets cashmere goats apart from other goat breeds. The cashmere goat's two-coated fleece is a natural adaptation to the harsh, cold winters in its native regions, such as the Himalayas and Mongolia. The undercoat provides insulation, while the outer coat protects the goat from the elements. In this image, the goat's coat appears particularly lush, likely due to the favorable conditions of the French zoo. This photograph is part of the Boswell collection, which showcases both old and new images of animals in French zoos. The exact date of this image is circa 1900, making it a fascinating glimpse into the past and a testament to the rich history of animal conservation efforts. The cashmere goat's striking appearance and unique characteristics continue to captivate us today, making this photograph a must-see for anyone interested in the natural world and the history of zoos.
