London Bridge City JLP01_10_21812
London Bridge City, Southwark, Greater London. Looking south-east towards the London Bridge City complex with No.1 London Bridge on the right.
Various buildings within this complex of offices, flats and shops on Tooley Street in London Bridge City were built by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group who redeveloped the former Hays Wharf site on the south bank of the River Thames. The redevelopment of the site took place over 2 1/2 years between 1985-1988 and included No.1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria and 29-33 Tooley Street. At the time, it was the biggest building contract in London and was one of the largest construction projects in the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic London Bridge City complex in all its grandeur. Looking south-east towards the complex, No. 1 London Bridge stands proudly on the right, showcasing its architectural brilliance. The buildings within this remarkable development were meticulously constructed by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group, who transformed the former Hays Wharf site into a bustling hub of offices, flats, and shops. The redevelopment of this site was an extraordinary feat that spanned over two and a half years from 1985 to 1988. It marked a significant milestone in London's construction history as one of the largest building contracts in the city and one of the country's most ambitious projects overall. As we gaze upon this image, we are drawn to the striking contrast between dark clouds and brooding skies against the vibrant waterscape below. Barges gracefully glide along the riverside, adding a touch of serenity amidst urban hustle. This print not only serves as a visual testament to London's ever-evolving skyline but also pays homage to an era when architectural innovation reshaped our cityscape. A true masterpiece captured by A© Historic England Archive that allows us to appreciate both past achievements and present possibilities for future generations to come.
