EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork titled "Tiger Family" by Kishi Ganku, a self-taught Japanese painter from the early 1800s. Renowned for his talent, Ganku's paintings were highly sought after by Kyoto's sophisticated patrons, including members of the imperial family. His works often featured vibrant and auspicious imagery inspired by Chinese historical figures, blossoming plum trees, cranes, peacocks, roosters, and most notably tigers. Born in Kanazawa but later relocating to Kyoto to work for the Arisugawa family, Ganku seamlessly incorporated stylistic elements from various schools such as Kano and Maruyama into his unique artistic expression. Influenced by renowned Chinese artist Shen Nanping as well, his creations exemplify a harmonious blend of cultural influences. Displayed on one of a pair of six-panel folding screens during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868), this particular piece is an exemplary representation of Ganku's mastery over ink and color on paper. The intricate details and skillful brushwork bring life to the majestic tiger family depicted in this artwork. Preserved with utmost care at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' guardianship, this print allows us to appreciate Ganku's artistic brilliance while immersing ourselves in the rich heritage of Japanese artistry.
