Tent panel of a dragon slayer, 1550-1599. Creator: Unknown
Tent panel of a dragon slayer, 1550-1599. This velvet medallion decorated the interior of an imperial tent, possibly donated by Shah Tahmasp to an Ottoman Turkish sultan. Captured after the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, the medallion was claimed as war booty by the European commander-in-chief Prince Sanguszko of Poland by whose name this and other panels are known. Here, a dragon slayer dressed in 16th-century court attire is poised to hurl a boulder at a snarling dragon in a landscape with blossoming fruit trees and perched fowl. Originally the ivory ground was covered with costly gilt-metal strips, which may have been removed for their monetary value

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent tent panel from the late 16th century, depicting a dragon slayer in all his glory. Created by an unknown artist, this velvet medallion once adorned the interior of an imperial tent, possibly gifted by Shah Tahmasp to an Ottoman Turkish sultan. However, fate had other plans for this exquisite piece of art. During the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, this remarkable medallion was seized as war booty by Prince Sanguszko of Poland, who served as the European commander-in-chief. It is through his name that this and several other panels gained recognition. The photograph reveals a scene where a valiant dragon slayer donned in court attire stands poised to hurl a massive boulder at a snarling dragon amidst lush landscapes filled with blossoming fruit trees and perched fowl. Originally set against an ivory ground covered with costly gilt-metal strips, it is believed that these precious embellishments were later removed for their monetary value. Nevertheless, even without its original adornments, the sheer craftsmanship and beauty of this piece continue to captivate viewers. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection during modern times, this extraordinary artifact represents Iran's rich artistic heritage during the Safavid period. Thanks to Heritage Art/Heritage Images' meticulous preservation efforts and photography skills, we can now admire and appreciate every intricate detail captured in this stunning photo print.
