Snow-Mass Mountain, 1874. Creator: Thomas Moran
Snow-Mass Mountain, 1874. View of Snowmass Mountain, in the Elk Mountains, Colorado, USA. It is a terribly hard road to travel. The slopes consist of masses of immense granitic fragments, the rock-bed from which they came appearing only occasionally. When we reach the crest, we find it also broken and cleft in masses and pillars. Professor Whitney ingeniously reckons that an industrious man, with a crow-bar, could, by a weeks industrious exertion, reduce the height of the mountain one or two hundred feet. Some of the members of the expedition amuse themselves by the experiment, toppling over great fragments, which thunder down the slopes, and furrow the wide snow-fields below. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Snow-Mass Mountain, 1874 - A Majestic Challenge
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the awe-inspiring Snowmass Mountain, standing tall amidst the Elk Mountains in Colorado, USA. Taken by the talented Thomas Moran in 1874, this image depicts a landscape of rugged beauty and untamed wilderness. The road to conquer Snowmass Mountain is not for the faint-hearted. The slopes are treacherous, consisting of massive granitic fragments with occasional glimpses of the rock-bed from which they originated. Even reaching the crest proves to be an arduous task as it is broken and fragmented into towering masses and pillars. Intriguingly, Professor Whitney suggests that a determined individual armed with only a crow-bar could potentially reduce the mountain's height by one or two hundred feet through weeks of industrious exertion. Members of an expedition find amusement in toppling over these colossal fragments, causing thunderous echoes as they cascade down the slopes and carve deep furrows on wide snow-fields below. This remarkable photograph comes from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874. It showcases Moran's exceptional talent for capturing both natural grandeur and human curiosity within a single frame. As we gaze upon this magnificent scene frozen in time, we can't help but marvel at nature's power while contemplating our own insignificance against such formidable forces.
