EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Simla, India in the early 1900s. Built on the steep slopes of the Lower Himalayas, this hill station was declared the summer capital of British India in 1864. In this particular image, we are presented with a street scene showcasing the native part of the city. The timber buildings that line the streets give us a glimpse into daily life during that time period. The bustling market and crowded streets depict a vibrant atmosphere filled with trade and activity. However, it is important to note that while Europeans chose more comfortable areas for themselves, this native part of town was often overcrowded and less comfortable for Indians. George Rose skillfully captured this moment in history through his stereocard views. This specific photograph is part of his collection titled "Studies through the Stereoscope" which can be viewed using a Sun Sculpture stereoscope made by Underwood & Underwood. Simla's unique blend of Indian culture and colonial influence is beautifully showcased in this image. It serves as a reminder of both its historical significance as well as its geographical beauty nestled within Himachal Pradesh state.
