The Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
The Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 1951. Roman architecture - The Pantheon, Rome - AD 120-124. Section and view of interior: Eye, Portico and Rotunda. The Pantheon, a former Roman temple, now a church, in Rome, Italy, is circular and consists of a porico and rotunda under the worlds largest unreinforced concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pantheon, Rome, Italy, 1951" is a captivating print that showcases the timeless beauty of Roman architecture. Captured by Shirley Markham, a talented artist and illustrator, this image takes us back to the year 1951 when she visited Rome and sketched classical buildings. The Pantheon itself is a remarkable structure - once a Roman temple and now transformed into a church. Its circular design features an impressive portico and rotunda under the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. The centerpiece of this magnificent dome is the oculus, an opening that allows natural light to flood in from above. Shirley Markham's artistic style was influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Her training at Central School of Art in London under Mervyn Peake further honed her skills as both a writer and illustrator. Despite her undeniable talent, Markham chose to give up her promising career after getting married in 1957. At that time, societal expectations dictated that middle-class women focus on raising children and managing their homes. Regrettably lacking confidence in her abilities upon returning to illustration later on prevented her from pursuing what could have been an illustrious career. For many years, Markham's portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now. With great pride and admiration for her work, we are delighted to publish it here for the first time – showcasing not only her exceptional talent but also shedding light on the challenges faced by women artists during those times.
