Page from the Late Shah Jahan Album: Harem Night-Bathing Scene, c. 1653. At least two scenes of women bathing under the moonlight were included in the Late Shah Jahan Album. In this painting eight women of the palace have removed their outer garments and jewelry down to their white petticoats to swim and dally in a luxurious marble pool. One male figure, who may be a eunuch guard or an imagined voyeur, looks on unnoticed, pointing to his mouth in a gesture of astonishment, perhaps at the beauty of the scene. He walks toward a small enclosure that matches descriptions of ceremonial ablution rooms set up in the womens quarters. The fully dressed women in the top and bottom border examine strings of pearls and other jewelry pieces while the attendants on the side bring perfumes and containers probably with other jewels for inspection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing scene from the Late Shah Jahan Album, dating back to 1653. The artwork, created by an unknown artist, transports us into the intimate world of the harem during a night-bathing ritual under the enchanting moonlight. In this exquisite painting, eight women from the palace gracefully immerse themselves in a luxurious marble pool. Stripped down to their white petticoats and devoid of jewelry or outer garments, they indulge in moments of leisure and playfulness. Unbeknownst to them, a male figure stands nearby – perhaps an eunuch guard or an intrigued observer – his astonishment evident as he points towards his mouth. As our eyes wander across the composition, we notice fully dressed women adorning both top and bottom borders examining strings of pearls and other precious jewels. Attendants on the side approach with perfumes and containers containing more treasures for inspection. These details provide insight into the opulence that surrounded these privileged women within their quarters. The meticulous brushwork combined with vivid colors brings life to this historical moment captured on paper using ink and gold accents. This masterpiece is part of India's rich Mughal court heritage art collection from Shah Jahan's reign (1628-1658) and is currently housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Through this evocative image, we are transported back in time to witness a glimpse of royal indulgence amidst beauty beyond compare.
