EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic Madame Teresia, also known as the Corsican Fairy. Created by Robert Cooper in 1822, this portrait depicts Maria Teresa, a woman who mesmerized audiences with her unique stature and talents. Standing at just 34 inches tall during her twenties, Maria Teresa became a sensation at various fairs where she exhibited herself for monetary gain. Her extraordinary height did not hinder her from performing on stage or dancing a spirited Corsican jig. She even had the honor of entertaining royalty with her remarkable abilities. In this particular image dating back to around 1769, we see Madame Teresia standing next to an average-sized woman for comparison. The contrast between their sizes is striking and emphasizes Maria Teresa's exceptional physicality. This intriguing photograph is part of "Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation". Volume III by Henry Wilson. Published in London in 1821 by J. Robins and Co. , it offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of entertainment during the late 18th century and early 19th century Britain. Robert Cooper skillfully captures Madame Teresia's allure through his engraving technique, highlighting both her uniqueness as a performer and her undeniable charm as a lady of that era. This historical artifact serves as a testament to the enduring fascination humanity has always held for those who defy conventional norms.
