Where London University Shares Quarters With The Imperial Institute, c1935. Creator
Where London University Shares Quarters With The Imperial Institute, c1935. Designed by Sir Thomas Colcutt and opened in 1887, the Imperial Institute in Kensington, London, was intended to be a monument to the emerging imperial sentiment. The buildings were demolished in the 1950s and 1960s after the institute closed, with the exception of the Queens Tower, which still stands today on the campus of Imperial College. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the harmonious coexistence of London University and the Imperial Institute in Kensington, London, circa 1935. Designed by renowned architect Sir Thomas Colcutt and opened in 1887, the Imperial Institute stood as a symbol of the growing imperial sentiment during that era. Sadly, most of its buildings were demolished in the following decades after its closure. However, one iconic structure remains standing to this day - the Queens Tower - proudly gracing the campus of Imperial College. The image showcases a stunning cityscape with these historic institutions nestled amidst a landscape adorned with trees and plants. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia to this architectural masterpiece from both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is a testament to British heritage and Victorian grandeur. Published in "Wonderful London, Volume 1" edited by Arthur St John Adcock, this photograph serves as a visual time capsule capturing not only an educational hub but also an important chapter in British history. The collaboration between London University and the Imperial Institute exemplifies their dedication to advancing education while embracing imperial ideals. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, it reminds us of how architecture can shape our society's values and aspirations throughout different eras. This image invites us to reflect on our past while appreciating how far we have come since then.
