Julia and Ethel Arnold, 1872. Creator: Lewis Carroll (British, 1832-1898)
Julia and Ethel Arnold, 1872. Best known as the author of Alices Adventures in Wonderland, mathematician, lecturer, and church deacon Charles Dodgson was an avid amateur photographer. His subjects were wide ranging but he has become best known for his portraits of children, which avoid the formal, formulaic quality of studio portraiture of the time. Julia was 10 and Ethel was 6 when this photo was taken in Dodgsons rooftop studio at Christ Church College, Oxford, on June 15, 1872. Ethel reminisced 57 years later that the times spent with Dodgson were " oases of brightness in a somewhat gray and melancholy childhood." She also remembered that " for a nervous child... to keep still for forty-five seconds at a time was no mean ordeal."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of childhood innocence and wonder. Taken in 1872 by Lewis Carroll, best known as the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" this image features Julia and Ethel Arnold, two young girls who were fortunate enough to be subjects of Dodgson's amateur photography. Unlike the stiff and formal portraits commonly seen during that era, Dodgson's photographs exude a naturalness and spontaneity that is truly remarkable. The rooftop studio at Christ Church College, Oxford served as the backdrop for this particular shot on June 15th. At the time, Julia was ten years old while Ethel was merely six. Ethel fondly reminisced about her time spent with Dodgson many years later, describing them as "oases of brightness" amidst an otherwise gray and melancholic childhood. She also recalled how challenging it was for a nervous child like herself to keep still for forty-five seconds at a time during these sessions. Lewis Carroll's talent behind the camera shines through in this albumen print from a wet collodion negative. It beautifully showcases his ability to capture genuine moments filled with curiosity and joy. This photograph serves as a testament to both Carroll's skill as an amateur photographer and his unique connection with children - one that transcends time through images like these preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images at The Cleveland Museum of Art.
