Henry II, King of France, before 1561. Creator: Jean Duvet (French, 1485-1561)

Henry II, King of France, before 1561. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Henry II, the esteemed King of France, prior to 1561. Created by the talented Jean Duvet, a renowned French artist from the 16th century, this print is part of a remarkable bound volume that illustrates a narrative of the Apocalypse derived from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The series consists of 23 engravings and represents Duvet's greatest artistic accomplishment. The significance of this particular print lies not only in its historical subject matter but also in its rarity. The Cleveland Museum of Art possesses one of only seven complete sets known to exist today. This fact underscores both Duvet's immense talent and his lasting impact on art history. Duvet was among France's first major printmakers and remains one of the most original artists from his era. Although he primarily worked in Langres, a provincial city, he was exposed to Italian art through circulating prints by notable figures such as Marcantonio Raimondi. As a result, Duvet's human figures exhibit solid modeling reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what truly distinguishes Duvet's style is his idiosyncratic approach characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This distinctive aesthetic choice adds an intriguing dimension to his works and further establishes him as an exceptional artist. In essence, this print captures not only Henry II but also Jean Duvet's extraordinary artistic vision—a fusion between Italian influences and his own innovative techniques—making it an invaluable piece within French heritage art.
