First flight of Wright brothers aircraft, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, December 17
First flight of Wright brothers aircraft, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, December 17, 1903. The first powered, heavier-than-air controlled flight in history flight lasted 12 seconds and flew a distance of 120 feet. Orville Wright piloted the historic flight while his brother, Wilbur, observed. The brothers took three other flights that day, each flight lasting longer than the other with the final flight going a distance of 852 feet in 59 seconds. This flight was the culmination of a number of years of research on gliders. In 1909 the Army Signal Corps purchased a Wright Flyer, creating the first military airplane. Although Wilbur passed away May 30, 1912, from typhoid fever, Orville remained an active promoter of aviation until his death on January 30, 1948

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous event in history - the first flight of the Wright brothers' aircraft. Taken on December 17,1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, this image immortalizes the birth of powered, controlled flight. In this iconic photograph, Orville Wright can be seen piloting the historic aircraft while his brother Wilbur observes with awe and anticipation. The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated; it marked a turning point in human transportation and opened up endless possibilities for aviation. The flight itself lasted a mere 12 seconds but covered an impressive distance of 120 feet. Undeterred by brevity, the brothers went on to complete three more flights that day. With each subsequent attempt surpassing its predecessor in duration and distance traveled, their final flight covered an astonishing 852 feet in just under one minute. This groundbreaking accomplishment was the culmination of years of meticulous research on gliders conducted by these visionary pioneers. Their dedication to perfecting their invention led to even greater milestones such as the Army Signal Corps purchasing a Wright Flyer in 1909 – marking the creation of the first military airplane. Although Wilbur's life was tragically cut short by typhoid fever in May 1912, Orville continued to champion aviation until his passing on January 30th, 1948. This remarkable photo serves as a testament to their enduring legacy and contribution to humanity's progress towards conquering the skies.
