Endymion, 1880. Artist: Joseph Swain

Endymion, 1880. Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, is the former Conservative Prime Minister. Now in opposition, he had used his free time to publish what would be his final novel, Endymion. In Greek mythology, Endymion is a beautiful young man loved by Selene, the Moon Goddess, who granted him eternal sleep so that he would remain forever young. In the early 1800s, Keats had published his epic poem, Endymion, which portrayed him as a brain-sick shepherd prince, which probably explains why Disraeli is depicted holding a shepherds crook. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 12, 1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Endymion, 1880" captures the essence of Benjamin Disraeli, the former Conservative Prime Minister turned author. In this intriguing image, Disraeli is depicted holding a shepherd's crook, symbolizing his literary portrayal as a brain-sick shepherd prince in Keats' epic poem "Endymion". The connection to Greek mythology is evident as Selene, the Moon Goddess who loved Endymion and granted him eternal sleep to preserve his youthfulness. Disraeli's decision to publish his final novel during his time in opposition showcases his multifaceted nature beyond politics. This artwork from Punch magazine reflects both political satire and admiration for Disraeli's literary pursuits. The monochrome engraving adds depth and character to the image while emphasizing its historical significance. It transports us back to the 19th century when aristocracy and statesmanship were intertwined with literature and mythology. This print not only highlights Disraeli's unique personality but also serves as a reminder of how art can transcend boundaries between different realms such as politics, literature, and mythology. It immortalizes an influential figure who left an indelible mark on British history through both his political achievements and creative endeavors.
