Christmas Eve (1910) in the Pack, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Christmas Eve (1910) in the Pack, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Christmas Eve (1910) in the Pack" captures a poignant moment during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. Taken by photographer Herbert Ponting, this image is a testament to the determination and scientific ambition of Scott and his team. In 1910, Scott set out on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse group of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and more. Their goal was twofold: to continue important scientific research in Antarctica and to be the first humans to reach the South Pole. This particular photograph depicts Christmas Eve in 1910 as they navigated through treacherous ice formations known as "the pack". Despite facing extreme conditions and isolation from their loved ones back home during this festive time of year, Scott's team remained resolute in their pursuit of knowledge and exploration. Tragically, upon reaching the South Pole on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Hindered by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining crew members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were eventually found eight months later along with their diaries which provided valuable insights into their experiences. This hauntingly beautiful photograph serves as a reminder of both their bravery in pushing boundaries for scientific discovery and the sacrifices made during one of history's most significant polar expeditions.
