Captain Bainbridge and the Dey of Algiers, 1800 (c1880) Artist: Hooper
Captain Bainbridge and the Dey of Algiers, 1800 (c1880). William Bainbridge was the commander of the George Washington, sent to carry the tribute that the United States paid to the Dey of Algiers so that American merchant ships would not be attacked by him in the Mediterranean. Upon his arrival, Bainbridge anchored in Algiers harbour under the guns of the ports fort. The Dey demanded that the George Washington transport his ambassador to Constantinople or be bombarded. Bainbridge was forced to comply in order to save his ship and crew from destruction. When Thomas Jefferson became President of the United states the following year he refused to continue the policy of bribing the pirates of the North African coast to safeguard American shipping and launched a naval campaign against them (First Barbary War). A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume II, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, depicting Captain William Bainbridge and the Dey of Algiers in 1800. As commander of the George Washington, Bainbridge was entrusted with the task of delivering tribute payments from the United States to ensure the safety of American merchant ships in the Mediterranean. Anchored under the watchful guns of Algiers' fort, Bainbridge found himself facing an ultimatum from the demanding Dey. In a desperate bid to protect his crew and vessel from destruction, Bainbridge reluctantly agreed to transport the Dey's ambassador to Constantinople. This incident highlights a time when America resorted to bribery as a means of safeguarding their shipping interests along North Africa's treacherous coast. However, this policy would soon change with Thomas Jefferson assuming presidency in 1801. Determined not to bow down before pirates any longer, Jefferson launched what became known as the First Barbary War against these marauders. The print itself is derived from Cassells History of The United States by Edmund Ollier and showcases Hooper's artistic talent. It serves as a visual reminder that diplomacy through appeasement can only go so far before decisive action becomes necessary for national security and sovereignty. As we gaze upon this historical image, let us reflect on how leaders like Captain William Bainbridge played pivotal roles in shaping America's foreign policies during its early years as an independent nation.
