EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring rock-cut water system in Megiddo, one of the most remarkable discoveries in this ancient city. Dating back to the Late Israelite / Iron Age period around the 9th century BC, this colossal water installation is a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess. The system consists of a deep 36-meter shaft with stairs leading to a horizontal tunnel spanning 70 meters, ultimately reaching a spring outside the city walls. Megiddo holds immense historical significance and is mentioned numerous times in biblical texts such as Joshua, Judges, Kings, Chronicles, and Zechariah. With its 25 layers of civilization documented on its tell or mound, it serves as an invaluable record of ancient history in the Land of Israel. Tragically, this once-thriving Israelite city met its demise in 732 B. C. E when it fell under Assyrian rule led by King Tiglath Pileser III. Today, Megiddo stands proudly as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts visitors from all over the world. In this stunning photograph taken by IAISI from Fine Art Storehouse, we are transported through time and space into Megiddo's underground labyrinth. As we descend into darkness towards an uncertain destination illuminated only by faint light at the end of the tunnel, we embark on an exploration that connects us intimately with our past and ignites our curiosity about ancient civilizations.
