Traditional Japanese Woodblock print of Actor
" Utagawa Toyokuni (1769, Edo - February 24, 1825, Edo) was born as the son of a puppet maker. He learned printmaking as a student of Toyoharu. At the beginning of his career he concentrated on bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. Toyokunis success and fame came when he started making yakusha-e or actor portraits and actor scenes. This image dated 1861 and bears the signature Toyokuni ga, and shows the actor Bando Hikosaburo IV as no Otoemon, there is a censor seal Aratame with date and was published by Kagiya ShobeiaAthe carver is unknown. The image of the actor is from a series where the actors own handwriting is incorporated (the right hand side ) and forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints."
