Founded as an irregular cavalry regiment during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the regiment was known initially as Maynes Horse after its founder Henry Otway Mayne. At the end of the rising his unit was stationed at Guna, in the state of Gwalior in central India. In 1860 Maynes Horse was accordingly renamed the 1st Regiment Central India Horse.
