Occupation of Brandfort, South Africa, 1899 (b / w photo)

5920863 Occupation of Brandfort, South Africa, 1899 (b/w photo) by Underwood & Underwood (c.1881-1940); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Occupation of Brandfort after evacuation forced by splendid detour of Canadian, Australian and New Zealand mounted infantry, 1900 circa.
Stereoscopic photograph, Boer War, 1900 circa.
Initially, the British expressed a preference for infantry volunteers from Australia, Canada and New Zealand, so the first colonial contingents included a number of infantry companies, but these were converted to mounted infantry almost as soon as they reached the theatre of operations, where the need for mobility had been well recognised. Many of the colonial soldiers were experienced horsemen, used to an outdoor life in their homelands, and made expert mounted infantrymen, able to meet the Boers on their own terms.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the Occupation of Brandfort in South Africa during 1899. Taken by Underwood & Underwood, this historical image showcases the aftermath of the evacuation forced by a remarkable detour executed by Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand mounted infantry around 1900. The stereoscopic photograph provides a glimpse into the Boer War era. Initially, British forces sought infantry volunteers from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Consequently, the first colonial contingents included several infantry companies that were swiftly converted to mounted infantry upon arrival in the theater of operations. Recognizing the importance of mobility in facing off against the Boers effectively, these experienced horsemen adapted seamlessly to their new roles as expert mounted infantrymen. This particular photo is part of a collection titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" consisting of 89 stereoscopic cards published by Underwood and Underwood and produced by Works and Sun Sculpture Studios circa 1900. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it offers valuable insights into an important chapter in South African history. Bridgeman Images holds copyright over this snapshot; however, its significance extends far beyond commercial use. It serves as a testament to bravery and adaptability amidst conflict while shedding light on colonial contributions during times of war.
