The city of Khotkovo is located on the outskirts of Moscow, near the Abramtsevo estate, owned by the patron Savva Mamontov, whose family made a fortune thanks to the construction of the railway. Repine spends a few summers there with her family. In 1881, he rented a dacha for the summer, from where he could admire the passage of trains. The construction of the railway in Russia was then a key issue. If Repin has little interest in industrial Russia, he is here witnessing the radical irruption of modernity in the landscape.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the painting "Railway Worker in Khotkovo, 1882" by Ilya Efimovich Repin. The artwork, displayed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, depicts a railway worker during the late 19th century. The city of Khotkovo, located near Moscow's outskirts and close to the Abramtsevo estate owned by patron Savva Mamontov, served as an inspiration for Repin. Spending several summers there with his family, he rented a dacha that provided him with a vantage point to observe passing trains. While industrial Russia may not have piqued Repin's interest greatly before this piece, here he witnesses the radical intrusion of modernity into the landscape. The construction of railways was crucial during this period in Russia's history. In this painting, we witness both the beauty of rural scenery and its transformation due to technological progress. The railway worker becomes a symbol of labor and employment amidst these changing times. Repin skillfully captures both the natural elements surrounding Khotkovo and the presence of human activity through his brushstrokes on canvas. This artwork serves as a testament to his artistic prowess and ability to convey complex themes through visual representation. Through this print from Fine Art Finder by Bridgeman Images, viewers can appreciate Repin's mastery while immersing themselves in a moment frozen in time—a snapshot capturing both historical significance and artistic brilliance.
