Englands Stanley Matthews and Harry Johnston line-up before the infamous 1953 defeat to Hungary at Wembley

Football - 1953 / 1954 season - England 3 Hungary 6
Englands Stanley Matthews, with Harry Johnston, right, line-up before kick-off at Wembley.
The British press referred to it as the " Match of the Century" - the originators of the game, against the finest team in the world at that time, the Magical Magyars. However Englands were defeated at home for the first time to a side from outside of the British Isles, and were shown to be technically and tactically inferior to the Hungarian side. The result led to a review of the antiquated training and tactics used by the England team, and the subsequent adoption of continental practices at an international and club level in the English game.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic photo print, we witness the historic moment when England's Stanley Matthews and Harry Johnston line up before the infamous 1953 defeat to Hungary at Wembley. The anticipation is palpable as these two football legends prepare to face off against the formidable Hungarian team known as the Magical Magyars. Dubbed by the British press as the "Match of the Century" this clash between England and Hungary symbolized a battle between tradition and innovation in football. As the originators of the game, England faced their greatest challenge yet - a team hailed as the finest in the world at that time. However, despite high hopes and fervent support from their home crowd, England suffered a devastating loss on their own turf. This defeat marked an unprecedented event for English football, revealing their technical and tactical inferiority compared to their Hungarian counterparts. The outcome of this match sparked a much-needed review of training methods and strategies within English football. It prompted a paradigm shift towards adopting continental practices both internationally and at club level. This pivotal moment laid down foundations for modernizing English football, ultimately shaping its future success on both domestic and international stages. This photograph serves as a reminder of how one game can have far-reaching consequences beyond its immediate result. It captures not only two legendary players but also represents an important turning point in football history.
