EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historical significance and architectural grandeur of the Berlin Zeughaus, also known as the Arsenal. On a momentous day in history, May 28th, 1695, Elector Friedrich III of Brandenburg laid the foundation stone for this iconic building that would later become a symbol of power and prestige. The zeughaus served as an arsenal to store weapons and military equipment for Prussia. The construction of this magnificent structure spanned several decades under the guidance of talented architects. Johann Arnold Nering initiated its design, followed by Martin Grunberg and Andreas Schluter who contributed their expertise from 1698 to 1699. However, it was Jean de Botd who gave the zeughaus its final exterior form in 1706. It took nearly three decades before this masterpiece was finally completed in 1730. Standing proudly in Germany's capital city, Berlin, this architectural marvel showcases both Western and Eastern influences with its intricate frieze work adorned with gold accents. Bennett Dean's skillful photography allows us to appreciate not only the physical beauty but also the historical significance embedded within these walls. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment when Prussian royalty left an indelible mark on German history through their vision for military might and artistic expression.
